In Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, you won't have much time to get to know your enemies because, like other Left 4 Dead-inspired co-op games, the goal of the game is to destroy them as quickly as possible. But Darktide co-creator Dan Abnett, who is also the author of many popular 40K novels, says the sinister figures emerging from the shadows in Tertia's underground hive have a story, and a sad one.

There's a new post from Abnett on the Darktide Steam page in which he explains the background behind some of the enemies we'll be facing in August when Warhammer 40K: Darktide is released. Many of them are humans corrupted by chaos, including a regiment of the Imperium's finest troops, the Sixth Moebian.

Abnett explains that due to the format of the game, we won't have much time to get to know the individual personalities of the Sixth Moebian veterans. "You may not recognize them personally," he writes, "but you will recognize their types, and on the basis of this, a picture of the Sixth Moebian will quickly form."

According to Abnett, the soldiers of the Sixth are very much like conscripts from anywhere in the Imperium. They are called into service at a young age and sent to the far reaches of space to fight alien and astral horrors they could never have imagined on Tertia. This is the threat that the inhabitants of the planet know as the "dark tide".

The experience, he says, is often traumatic if not fatal.

"Some soldiers, of course, serve brilliantly and bravely and remain loyal. But others fall victim to the insidious touch of the Dark Tide. They face the vicious effect of the Distortion, and it changes them. They become - literally, in some cases - the one against what they're fighting."

The Moebian Sixth Army uses a variety of troops, and in Darktide you'll find several of them: melee fighters, flamethrowers, heavy weapons squads, and snipers. "They have everything you need in an armed squad if you want to take over the world," says Abnett.
